Vauxhall Overview Despite being owned by the multi-national General Motors since the 1920’s, Vauxhall has a long and proud history of producing commercial vehicles here in Britain. Having begun to manufacture commercial vehicles in the 1960’s, it wasn’t until the late nineties that Vauxhall vans were badged with the now synonymous Griffin logo. Prior to this, they came under branding of the now defunct Bedford company, who borrowed the platform of many successful Vauxhall cars to produce vans.

The first such van was the Bedford Beagle which was launched in 1964 as a conversion of the Vauxhall Viva. Although production at Bedford ceased long ago, its legacy lives on in nearby Luton, where Vauxhall is based.

The tradition of converting cars to vans has continued to this day, with the Vauvhall Combovan and the Vauxhall Corsavan both sharing their underpinnings with Vauxhall’s ever-popular Corsa series.

The Corsa’s older brother, the Astra also has a van incarnation in the form of the Vauxhall Astravan which is assembled at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. Recently, the Luton plant celebrated its 500,000th Vauxhall Vivaro model rolling off the production line. 2007 was a particularly good year for Vauxhall as they scooped a host of accolades, including the much-coveted, Green Fleet manufacturer award. Sales figures reached record levels and this is a trend which looks set to continue in 2008.
