Mercedes Benz S Class- What Car 2009 Luxury Car Winner

For a third consecutive year, the S-Class has won the title of Best Luxury Car in What Car?’s annual awards. It’s also the eighth time in the last decade that the S-Class has secured the title, confirming its status as a benchmark for exceptional style, luxury, comfort and safety.

As Steve Fowler of What Car? commented, it offers “… the finest materials, scrupulous attention to detail and total focus on what buyers of the finest saloon cars expect”. Little wonder then, that the S-Class accounted for 21% of all sales in the luxury car segment in 2008.

The engine line-up for the S-Class comprises of a V6, a V8 unit and a V12 petrol engine, along with a V6 diesel engine. The new generation of V8 petrol engines make their debut in the S 500. The new powerplant offers considerably higher output and torque than its predecessor, whilst reducing noise emissions.

The Mercedes S Class hosts an impressive list of standard features. Its safety features include ASR, Acceleration Skid Control. By sharing the same sensors as ABS, ASR automatically brakes any wheel that spins when you accelerate. This way, you re-grip the ground much quicker and are far more stable, whatever your speed. In addition to this, the Electronic Stability Programme, ESP, supplements ASR with a number of additional sensors whose chief role is to evaluate any skidding movements, anticipate danger and then eliminate it. It does this by using engine torque and braking on individual wheels. Active Body Control, ABC, is available as an optional extra for the S 500. This system enables outstanding handling dynamics without compromising on comfort, thanks to a combination of active control and passive damping. This comes as standard on the S 600 L and S 65 AMG.

Leather interior comes as standard in all the S Class models with exlusive passion leather in the S600 L Model. Heated front and rear seats are standard across most of the range.

Cockpit Management and Navigation Display (COMAND) comes as standard on all S Class models. This includes a 8" colour display, radio, CD / DVD player, MP3 compatibility, PCMCIA slot, three-point aux-in connection allowing audio and video integration. Also includes HDD navigation in head unit with 5 digit post code entry, covering most of Europe including TMC (Traffic Message Channel) where available.

If you upgrade to the S600L you will also get a Harman/Kardon Logic 7 Surround sound system with 14 high-performance speakers and additional amplifiers and a TV tuner with digital and analogue reception capabilities.

Top Gear has reviewed the Mercedes S Class as "Possibly the best discreet limo in the world. Makes the Maybach look overblown and not of any value whatsoever". And goes on to say "The S-class is a large rear-drive saloon that invented the word ‘isolation’. Packed with every conceivable gadget, the S-class is traditionally a place where new technology is debuted – and because this is Merc’s flagship it usually works faultlessly."
